Like its predecessor, Green Porn, Polly Barton’s wide-ranging documentary seeks to open up questions regarding sex, gender and culture. But unlike her more academic ventures (ethnography of Japanese village or oral history of pornographic film) this one doesn’t take an objective approach or seek to identify specific audiences; rather it involves conversations amongst a handful of lay people.
Some of these stories are fascinating; for instance, an octogenarian recalling how shocked she felt after viewing hardcore pornography with work friends over fish and chips was incredible; or the half-Japanese woman discussing sexual repression due to Japanese male culture and behavior towards women; in addition, her friends shared interesting anecdotes like one with a burping fetish!
At times, movies become bogged down in cultural and philosophical debates – for instance, discussions regarding whether pornography may be used as a form of theater of unhappiness or to soothe hurtful emotions can be fascinating but insufficient to drive forward the plotline of the movie.
