Jake Van Dorn is a wealthy Calvinist businessman when his daughter Kristen disappears during a church-sponsored trip to Bellflower, California. With the assistance of private investigator Mast specializing in tracing teenagers, Van Dorn quickly discovers that Kristen has been kidnapped and lured into California’s illegal porn industry. While investigating Niki – an erotic dancer and occasional porn actress who knows where Kristen may be hiding out – becomes close; their uneasy alliance continues as Niki appreciates Van Dorn seeing her as more than just an object while Van Dorn hopes to save Kristen from dangerous sadomasochistic player Ratan.
This film is an outstanding anime release in recent years. An eerily disturbing exploration of sex subculture, it has had an incredible impact beyond animation itself. Like Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 Taxi Driver film, this one offers a message about parental neglect and loss – its soundtrack features satin-draped 70s pop with Houston taking center stage; Kenny G & Aaron Neville, Joe Cocker & Sass Jordan and Stigers also make appearances to keep tension at a simmering level as darkness sets in.
