Littlefoot, an Apatosaurus with an affection for adventure, leads a herd of dinosaurs across a prehistoric land in search of the Great Valley. Along with Cera (an impetuous Triceratops), Duckie (parasaurolophus), and Petrie (Pteranodon), these herd members must face dangerous predators, cold weather conditions, and other natural disasters as they traverse this treacherous journey across land.
Land Before Time features characters who are generally realistic and do not depart far from stereotypical representations of their types. Unfortunately, however, some names and behaviors of characters can be offensive to members of different cultures and religions.
Cera’s faith can sometimes clash with Littlefoot’s more liberal viewpoint; as evidenced in The Land Before Time VII: The Stone of Cold Fire when they bicker over which direction to take on the Great Longneck Migration. Also in The Land Before Time V: Mysterious Island when Daddy Topps and Grandpa Longneck argue over which ducky to listen to (Cera or Ducky), Littlefoot attempts to intervene by criticizing both parties for speaking authoritatively to one another but their fight escalates until Ducky, Petrie and Spike intervene and step in before striking each other or intervening later intervening by talking them down and intervening themselves!
Don Bluth’s beautiful animation ensures this is still enjoyable for both kids and adults, offering plenty of charm, peril, drama and emotionally moving scenes that all families will appreciate. A must-see animated classic!
